Area Introduction...

Ealing is a suburb of West London archaeological evidence shows to have been inhabited for around 7,000 years.

The name stems from the Saxon name 'Gillinges', which means 'people of Gilla'. This was abbreviated over the years from 'Illing' to 'Ylling' and eventually to Ealing in the 19th Century.

Ealing is famed for its film studios, which are the worlds oldest. The Eaing comedies such as 'The Ladykillers' and 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' were filmed here, before the BBC took over the studios in thee 60's. Episodes of Dr Who and Monty Python's Flying Circus were filmed in the surrounding area. Recently the studios have been making films again such as 'Notting Hill' and 'St. Trinians'.

The Ealing Jazz Club in the 60's was instrumental in that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards met Brian Jones playing at the club.

The area still hosts a jazz festival, as well as a blues and beer festival. Notable residents include Sanjeev Bhaskar, Sid James, Pete Townsend and Dusty Springfield. Good local bars include The North Star, which attracts a lovely local crowd and services real ales.
