Area Introduction...

Marylebone is a wealthy area within The City of Westminster, which gets its name from a church dedicated to St Mary, now known at St Marylebone Parish Church.

The original church was set on the bank of a 'bourne', or small stream called the Tyburn. The manor of Tyburn is mentioned in the Doomesday Book of 1086 as belonging to Barking Abbey. From the 13th century it passed through various noble hands including Henry VIII and James 1st.

The surrounding street names reflect that of some of the owners such as Cavendish Square after Lady Margaret Cavendish Harley and Portland Place after the Dukes of Portland.

In the 18th century the area was known for the seedy entertainments found at Marylebone Gardens, such as bear-baiting, dueling and prize fighting, including women fighters.

Now it is home to the BBC head quarters in London, Selfridges, Harley Street and Madame Tussauds. Famous residents have included John Lennon, Charles Dickens, HG Wells, Madonna, Jimi Hendrix, Cat Stevens and Paul McCartney.

There are wide variety of pubs in the area but the Golden Eagle is an unpretentious local boozer with real ales and piano sing-along.

So if you want a swift pint after your erotic massage session then this could be the place for you.
